Trick or Treat, Halloween ideas and memories

Halloween and trick or treating has always been a favorite time for me.  As a child I loved trick or treating, with all my friends,  in the costumes my Mom made.  As a young Mother I enjoyed creating costumes from my children’s ideas and watching them go out the door to go treat or treating with their friends.  Now I am taking my Mother’s role and enjoy welcoming the children who come to our house for their treats on Halloween night.

Time for football – time for tailgating – time for ice coolers

Ice chest? Ice cooler? Ice box? What ever you call it you need one! And there are all types to choose from!  It is time for football which mean tailgating.  Also with this wonderful weather comes outside parties, and tubing down the river… which means lots of cold drinks, which means lots of ice, which means you need something to keep your ice and beverages cold!

Through out the years I have seen people use some strange things to hold their ice and beverages.  A bath tub (and I mean a working bathtub) in the living room was probably the weirdest and that was in a penthouse in Houston, TX.   Beach parties always call for the garbage can punch which holds the beverage and the ice.  Kiddie pools are another favorite. 4th of July Party? Fun, Food, and fireworks

                    fireworks

You have to be living in a cave if you don’t know it’s almost July 4th!  I went to the grocery store and it is red, white, and blue everywhere!  Cakes, cookies, ice cream, hot dogs, buns, magazines all showing their colors and sharing ideas on how to party and entertain on this Independence Day.

Here are a few tips to help make your 4th of July a big bang…

  • To keep things you and your guests cool provide “frozen wash cloths” in a cooler or a big tub.  The key is to fill the bottom of your ice chest with water and ice, followed by the wash cloths.  Roll the wash cloths. Some people tie them with string but that isn’t necessary.  When you guest want to cool down they can reach in get an icy cold cloth and hold to the back of their neck or head for a quick body cool down. Stocked bar for low caloric drinks for entertaining at home

I am not a fancy drinker at home mainly because I like the yummy sweet drinks which means weight gain. And I had no idea what to buy until I came across this list.

Luckily the Hungry Girl has made it simple for those of us that would like to have the fancy drinks without all the calories.  Here are her suggestions…

Liquor essentials – Vodka, rum, and tequila are good basics, and flavored varieties can be fun ways to amp up your drinks. Orange-flavored vodka? Yes, please! Passion fruit rum? Heck, yeah!

No-calorie and low-calorie mixers
- Club soda, diet cola (we like Coke Zero), diet lemon-lime soda (Sprite Zero rules!), light juice drinks (Trop50 has many flavors), and sugar-free powdered drink mixes (duh, Crystal Light) are at the top of our list.
Sugar-free flavored syrups – If you don’t know about Torani, it’s time you learned. Scope out the brand’s many sugar-free flavors, find a flavor or two that you love, and order some online. (You can also find them at stores like BevMo! and Cost Plus World Market.)
Ice – We can’t emphasize how important it is to have good ice. Boo to freezer burn! If you have one of those refrigerators that dispenses crushed ice, SCORE! You are one lucky duck. Continue reading

The Easter Egg Roll

2009-03 Ohio trip flowers, Mike Bryant, Tina 072 2005-03 DHA's 61st in NYC 054

Since only a lucky few will be at the White House Egg Roll on Monday, April 13, Katharine Zaleski Senior Editor, Special Projects, Huffington Post bloggers has put together a list of little know facts about the event.  Here are a few…

1. The White House Easter egg roll was originally in front of Capitol Hill. That site was closed off after President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill in 1876 banning egg-rolling because it caused too much wear and tear to the lawns. The law was so strictly enforced that the Capitol Police had to eject some die-hard rollers.

2. President Rutherford B. Hayes’ wife, Lucy, was the first person to bring the egg roll to the White House. In 1878, she let in a group of rollers who were waiting at the gates, hoping to take advantage of the White House’s sloping lawn. She made sure liquor and wine were banned, but not the eggs!

3. Dolly Madison is said to have started the egg roll in front of the Capitol in 1814.
She’s also considered the first to have served ice cream at the White House. That, along with her love for egg rolling, makes her quite the farm products queen.

4. Grover Cleveland was the first President to join the egg roll. In 1885 a group of kids demanded a personal audience with the president after walking into the East Room of the White House (security clearly wasn’t as tight then). After that, the rollers were allowed indoors.

5. Music was added to the party in 1889. The United States Marine Band, conducted by John Philip Sousa, was asked to play for the children. Sousa’s “Easter Monday on the White House Lawn” was composed in honor of the tradition. The Jonas Brothers, a favorite band of First Daughters Malia and Sasha Obama, playedfor the rollers in 2008.

6. The White House instituted a one adult per child rule in the 1930s. The crowd got so sneaky about circumventing the rule that the Secret Service had to regulate at the gates. Crafty children would even charge adults to come in with them.

7. Folk Dancing was introduced as a replacement to the egg roll in 1929. President Hoover’s wife, Lou, was so grossed out by the egg stench that she tried to encourage diversions that didn’t involve cracking eggs.

8. The egg roll was canceled during the two World Wars. Renovations during the Truman administration also stopped the event from 1948 through 1952.

9. The first and only Easter egg hunt was introduced during the Nixon administration. Unlike other things discovered in the Nixon White House, some bad eggs remained hidden and a stench ensued. The Nixons were also the the first family to introduce egg roll races, using spoonsfrom the White House kitchen.

10. A member of First Lady Pat Nixon’s staff dressed up as the first human-sized bunny. Since then, life-sized bunnies and other animals have strolled the White House lawns during the event.

11. The Obama administration allocated tickets for gay and lesbian families for the first time this year. In 2006, Conservative groups accused gay and lesbian parents attending the event of “crashing.”

12. The Obamas chose a green egg as their souvenir. Recent administrations have chosen to give out keepsakes of the event. In the spirit of a greener White House, kids will get an egg designed to be “the greenest egg in White House Easter Egg Roll History” this year.
