Stocked bar for low caloric drinks for entertaining at home

I am not a fancy drinker at home mainly because I like the yummy sweet drinks which means weight gain. And I had no idea what to buy until I came across this list.

Luckily the Hungry Girl has made it simple for those of us that would like to have the fancy drinks without all the calories.  Here are her suggestions…

Liquor essentials – Vodka, rum, and tequila are good basics, and flavored varieties can be fun ways to amp up your drinks. Orange-flavored vodka? Yes, please! Passion fruit rum? Heck, yeah!

No-calorie and low-calorie mixers
- Club soda, diet cola (we like Coke Zero), diet lemon-lime soda (Sprite Zero rules!), light juice drinks (Trop50 has many flavors), and sugar-free powdered drink mixes (duh, Crystal Light) are at the top of our list.
Sugar-free flavored syrups – If you don’t know about Torani, it’s time you learned. Scope out the brand’s many sugar-free flavors, find a flavor or two that you love, and order some online. (You can also find them at stores like BevMo! and Cost Plus World Market.)
Ice – We can’t emphasize how important it is to have good ice. Boo to freezer burn! If you have one of those refrigerators that dispenses crushed ice, SCORE! You are one lucky duck.
Fruit - Whether fresh, canned (in juice), or frozen (without added sweeteners), fruit is good to keep on hand for making blended beverages and garnishing mixed drinks.
Bar tools – We keep it simple: a jigger (to measure shots), a measuring cup with ounce markings (to measure mixers), a shaker, a blender, glasses, and bendy straws!
A copy of Hungry Girl Happy Hour – What? This adorable cocktail book is a guilt-free bartender’s best friend. Plus, there are super-delicious party foods inside! (Recipes for them, that is. Not actual food items.)

The Easter Egg Roll

2009-03 Ohio trip flowers, Mike Bryant, Tina 072 2005-03 DHA's 61st in NYC 054

Since only a lucky few will be at the White House Egg Roll on Monday, April 13, Katharine Zaleski Senior Editor, Special Projects, Huffington Post bloggers has put together a list of little know facts about the event.  Here are a few…

1. The White House Easter egg roll was originally in front of Capitol Hill. That site was closed off after President Ulysses S. Grant signed a bill in 1876 banning egg-rolling because it caused too much wear and tear to the lawns. The law was so strictly enforced that the Capitol Police had to eject some die-hard rollers.

2. President Rutherford B. Hayes’ wife, Lucy, was the first person to bring the egg roll to the White House. In 1878, she let in a group of rollers who were waiting at the gates, hoping to take advantage of the White House’s sloping lawn. She made sure liquor and wine were banned, but not the eggs!

3. Dolly Madison is said to have started the egg roll in front of the Capitol in 1814.
She’s also considered the first to have served ice cream at the White House. That, along with her love for egg rolling, makes her quite the farm products queen.

4. Grover Cleveland was the first President to join the egg roll. In 1885 a group of kids demanded a personal audience with the president after walking into the East Room of the White House (security clearly wasn’t as tight then). After that, the rollers were allowed indoors.

5. Music was added to the party in 1889. The United States Marine Band, conducted by John Philip Sousa, was asked to play for the children. Sousa’s “Easter Monday on the White House Lawn” was composed in honor of the tradition. The Jonas Brothers, a favorite band of First Daughters Malia and Sasha Obama, playedfor the rollers in 2008.

6. The White House instituted a one adult per child rule in the 1930s. The crowd got so sneaky about circumventing the rule that the Secret Service had to regulate at the gates. Crafty children would even charge adults to come in with them.

7. Folk Dancing was introduced as a replacement to the egg roll in 1929. President Hoover’s wife, Lou, was so grossed out by the egg stench that she tried to encourage diversions that didn’t involve cracking eggs.

8. The egg roll was canceled during the two World Wars. Renovations during the Truman administration also stopped the event from 1948 through 1952.

9. The first and only Easter egg hunt was introduced during the Nixon administration. Unlike other things discovered in the Nixon White House, some bad eggs remained hidden and a stench ensued. The Nixons were also the the first family to introduce egg roll races, using spoonsfrom the White House kitchen.

10. A member of First Lady Pat Nixon’s staff dressed up as the first human-sized bunny. Since then, life-sized bunnies and other animals have strolled the White House lawns during the event.

11. The Obama administration allocated tickets for gay and lesbian families for the first time this year. In 2006, Conservative groups accused gay and lesbian parents attending the event of “crashing.”

12. The Obamas chose a green egg as their souvenir. Recent administrations have chosen to give out keepsakes of the event. In the spirit of a greener White House, kids will get an egg designed to be “the greenest egg in White House Easter Egg Roll History” this year.

It’s strawberry time. How do you want yours?

strawberry colander (11)

There is a Strawberry Festival every year in Plant City, Florida.  This year’s festival was held March 1 thru March 11. It was huge and the strawberries were even huger (Is that a word?) !  People come from everywhere to attend this ten daycelebration brimming with live entertainment and more recipes using strawberries than you can imagine.  They eat the biggest and best strawberries grown right there in Plant City, the capital of  the strawberry.  If you love strawberries than this is the place you need to be.  Everything there is made with strawberries…  I am sad to say I did not make it this year but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy eating fresh strawberries.

One of my favorite strawberry recipes is from my sister in law.  When I would go visit her in Florida we would stay up all night sewing and hanging curtains, painting walls, moving furniture, hanging pictures while eating Strawberries Romanoff and drinking white wine or champagne.  Oh my gosh, we had the best time!

Vicki liked to do things fast and the easiest way possible.  Although she was fast she was also a perfectionist.  Everything had to be done perfect and it had to be, well,  a bit different.  It had to look good and taste even better.  Her recipe for Strawberries Romanoff is the quickest and most delicious I have ever tasted.  When I get rave reviews I kinda hate to admit how darn easy it is to  prepare!… I mean it is just so simple!  Vicki had a few variations, but this one was her favorite.  She would get a large plate then add little piles of (1) granulated sugar, (2) confection sugar, and (3) brown sugar.  She then put sour cream in a small bowl and placed that bowl on the same large plate with the sugars.  In a larger bowl she would put the fresh juicy red strawberries that had been washed and hulled.  We would then pick a strawberry, dip it in the sour cream then dip it in one or all of the sugars, then slowing bite into it and ahhhhhhh, it was so good.  The evenings just drift away.

Another variation of Strawberry Romanoff is to mix the following ingredients in a bowl:

Ingredients:
1/2 cup sour cream
3 teaspoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons brandy (or vanilla)
4 cups fresh strawberries

You use this as a sauce to dip the strawberries or you can place the strawberries in 4 individual goblets and top the berries with the Romanoff sauce.

Served either way, this is a surprise dessert that everyone will enjoy.

It’s almost too easy to admit to… Oh, and be sure to get your strawberries fresh.  Maybe I will see you next year at the Florida Strawberry Festival.

Aprons that make you want to cook and entertain

In my last article I mentioned how, sometimes, I am just not in the mood to cook or bake. Come on now, admit it, you sometimes feel that way, too?  Well, I have found something that makes me feel like a kitchen diva and a little mischievous.  I know this may sound a little crazy but these little miracle workers called Flirty Aprons are fantastic!  They make me feel like the queen of vegetables, the Princess of Pasta; they help put the Sassy in the Sauce.

I first saw these in 2010 over at The Happy Housewife.  There she was in her kitchen cooking dinner and wearing the cutest (and kinda sexy) apron I had ever seen!  It resembled my Mamu’s aprons from the 1940’s and 1950’s, but this one had a bit of “oomph” added to it!  Cute, cute, cute!  I began wondering… is this why she is so happy?

After a little investigation I found there is a creative pattern that matches almost every personality or occasion.  They range from cutesy to fashionista to sexy.  I love the cupcake themed apron, but then again the little black dress is a fashion statement in its self!   You can pick and choose as your mood dictates!  The style of these aprons with the halter front and the A-line silhouette will flatter any figure.  Not only do they flatter but they stop the food splatter! After all isn’t that the purpose of an apron?

An apron for a gift?  You bet ya!  These are great for any occasion and certainly fit the bill for any holiday!  They have aprons for all sizes for men, women, or children!  Now they have a line of bibs for the little ones! From babies to babes to the brawny there is a new apron for everyone on your list.

Want to perk things up during Easter?  Want to feel like a domestic diva?  Try a new Flirty Apron. Go take a look at these flattering flirty aprons.   Which one is on your wish list?

Excuse me now while I go pick out my special apron… I do believe I feel a little playful… maybe something with fruit and cream???

Easy Cupcakes Full of Easter Flowers

How many times have you been invited to a party and you were asked to bring something?  If you are like me it happens all the time.  I really don’t mind taking something it’s just that I am not always in the mood to cook or bake before I go to a party.  What do people usually ask you to bring?  Are you noted for a special recipe or dish?

Well, here is something that everyone will love and it is my answer to every party.  Cupcakes!  No, I don’t mean the kind you buy at your local grocery store. I mean the kind you can bake and decorate yourself.  When you agree to bring something to a party, please, please, please, don’t bring something you just went to the store and bought.

I always have a couple boxes of cake mix in my pantry.  So I am pretty well set when it comes to baking a cake, cupcakes or cookies.

A couple years ago, Amy at MomsToolbox, introduced me these wonderful silicon cupcake cups.  The cups I use are made by Wilton.  You can buy these at Michaels and other craft stores.  They can be used over and over for many occasions!

I have a friend that always invites us to her Easter Party.  This year is no exception.  I decided to take… you guessed it… cupcakes!  Not just any cupcakes but bright Spring flower Easter cupcakes!

I prepared the cake mix, filled the colorful silicon cups and baked as the directions told me.  After they cooled, I iced them with icing made from confectioner sugar.  You know the kind where you add milk and a bit of flavoring (your choice) to the confectioner sugar.  If you like you can go crazy and add food coloring to the icing!  I always have lots of icing leftover because I don’t measure and I have a hard time getting the correct consistency.  Lucky for me I’m the one that gets to lick the bowl!

You can use all kinds of decorations.  For these cupcakes I used some silk flowers I had been saving.  I am not sure why I was saving them.  So I just started pulling them apart and cutting them.  Then I arranged the flowers on top of each cupcake.  They looked very festive and Spring-like. They kind of reminded me of an Easter basket full of flowers.

When I arrived sat my friend’s party and walked in the door you can’t even imagine the response from all of her guests! After eating a wonderful Easter dinner everyone headed for the flower cupcakes! Good thing I licked the bowl because there weren’t any Easter cupcakes left over.  Guess they were a hit!

The Party is for Fat Tuesday. Do you party or entertain on Fat Tuesday?

How are you celebrating Fat Tuesday?  I was just on Facebook and visited Home Grown Chic before realizing today is Fat Tuesday.  Kelly of Home Grown Chic decorated her home for Fat Tuesday.  What is that all about? I have never actually celebrated Fat Tuesday let alone decorate but I’m thinking I must be in the minority.  People are getting a little wild and crazy out there.  I’m not sure I understand the whole idea of the party thing.  Seems to me it should be more of a religious celebration since it is the beginning of the fasting season of Lent.

Lots of my friends head to New Orleans to be entertained and party on Fat Tuesday.  They don’t just go for a day… some of them stay a whole week!    I don’t think they are going for the pancakes which was the practice of Christians using up their eggs, milk and butter which was forbidden during Lent. They are being entertained the modern way with parades, beads, bands, whiskey, and music!  Mardi gras in New Orleans is the party of parties!

Universal Studios also has a Mardi gras celebration that started on February 11, 2012 and goes until April 14th.  So if you want to party on go to Universal where the entertainment is endless… and maybe a little less raunchy!

However you party on Fat Tuesday I hope you do it responsibly!

A day for the Irish to party! Are you Irish on March 17th?

Each month seems to have a “special” day and March has one of my favorites!  St. Patrick’s Day! I am fortunate in the respect that I am one of the O’Donohoe clan.  Though the spelling has been changed many times over the years we still remain Irish through and through. I love celebrating this holiday in exceptionally fun ways.  Most of my friends remember how in high school I would dye my hair green.  Oh, I know that doesn’t seem so strange now but I did it back in the mid-sixties!  Everyone was amused and expected hair my hair to be green every March 17th except when our school consolidated our senior year and the new students and teachers were not aware of my Irish tradition of green hair. The principal, Mr. Smith, didn’t take kindly to my green hair.  He said I was causing a disruption!? What?  How could that be?  I’ve done this for the previous four years and no teacher, student or Principal had ever complained.  Well, I lost my case and was sent home for the day.  Let it be known Mr. Smith did not halt my Irish spirit.  I celebrate every Saint Patrick’s Day with pride and full of the green!

There are many ways and places to party on Saint Patrick’s Day but one of the least expected places is Savannah, Ga!  The St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Savannah is the city’s largest annual celebration which includes the second largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the United States and possibly the largest St. Patrick’s Day street celebration in the US. They expect to have over 300,000 people to party together at this year’s festivities!  The 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 17th. You can expect to be entertained by Irish bands, bagpipes, over 325 floats, celebrities and perhaps a few leprechauns!  Don’t leave without tasting the green beer and trying the green colored grits.  Speaking of green, the biggest event, St. Patrick’s Celebration on the River, is free and open to the public. For more information on this historic and entertaining event go to http://savannahsaintpatricksday.com/.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

What do you do to celebrate St. Patricks Day?  Do you eat special food?  Drink green beer?  If you entertain in your home on St. Patrick’s what do you do to make it different?  Let us know.  We need your ideas on how to party on March 17th!

Need a Valentine’s Day Surprise? Find the rice crispies!

Oh my gosh… it’s Valentine’s Day and, of course, again, I have not gone out and bought the love of my life a Valentine’s Day card or anything to express my love.  Being the thoughtful man I married, he had 2, not one, but two heartfelt cards waiting in the kitchen for me.  He put one by the coffee pot and one on top of my laptop.  Did I feel quilty?  Maybe a little but not for very long!

One year, long ago, I was also caught in the “Oops, I forgot him again.” mode.  But  I was much thinner and could bend over a copy machine.  I found myself stuck in our office and couldn’t think of how to make DH a Valentine card… then I saw the copy machine.  The brain started working and the creative juices were put in gear.  While everyone was at lunch I immediately unbuttoned the front of my top, leaned over the copy machine, and pressed my chest with it’s lacey bra onto the glass and hit “Copy”.  BEAUTIFUL!   What man can resist a picture of lace covered breasts?  Not mine!  He still has that homemade card in his personal drawer.

Well, since I don’t have a copy machine and I’m not quite as thin as I was back then… I quickly ran to the pantry and found my box of Rice Crispies!  No, I didn’t eat them for breakfast, silly!  I proceeded to make a batch of rice crispie treats.  I added all the red food coloring that I could find in my pantry, to the mix then plopped it onto some aluminum foil and created the best red heart possible.  After I molded (so to speak) the heart, I found a tray.  I put my heart on that tray, found some wine glasses and a bottle of wine then marched right into our bedroom.  I made the bed… didn’t have time to do that earlier.  Then I arranged the bed with my heart on a tray and the wine…  Hope he likes it!

What was your Valentine Surprise?
